Cremation Services
Cremation is a widely chosen option that offers flexibility in how families say goodbye, from a full service to a more private arrangement.
At AnLe Funerals, we guide you through the process with care and clarity.
What is Cremation?
Cremation involves placing your loved one in a coffin or casket and carrying out the cremation process, after which the ashes are returned to the family.
Attended, Unattended and Witnessed Cremation
An attended cremation is a cremation where family and friends are present for a funeral service or farewell before the cremation takes place.
This may include a funeral service at a chapel, church, or crematorium, often with music, readings, eulogies, cultural traditions, or religious rituals. In many cases, the coffin is present during the service before the final farewell takes place.
This may involve the service taking place in a chapel before the coffin is respectfully transferred for cremation.
An unattended cremation, often referred to as a direct cremation, takes place without a funeral service or attendees present beforehand.
Some families may also request a witnessed cremation. A witnessed cremation allows selected family members to be present at the crematorium to witness the commencement of the cremation process. Availability and procedures can vary depending on the crematorium and their specific requirements.
We will guide families through the available options and any venue-specific requirements.
Before the Cremation
Families may include a viewing, funeral service, or cultural ceremony before the cremation takes place.
On the Day
This is typically followed by transfer to the crematorium, where the final stage of the cremation occurs.
After Cremation
Ashes are usually available within approximately 2 days, and families may choose how they wish to keep or memorialise them.
Cultural Considerations
Cremation practices may vary depending on cultural or religious traditions, and we will guide you through these considerations.
Guidance
We understand this can feel overwhelming. You do not need to decide everything immediately — we will guide you step by step.

What is an attended cremation?
An attended cremation is a cremation where family and friends are present for a funeral service, viewing, gathering, or farewell before the cremation takes place.
This may include:
- A viewing
- A funeral service at a chapel, church, or crematorium
- Music, readings, eulogies, or prayers
- Cultural or religious traditions
- A final farewell before the coffin is transferred for cremation
At some crematoriums, the coffin may remain present during the service before being respectfully transferred at the conclusion of the ceremony.
What is an unattended cremation?
An unattended cremation, often referred to as a direct cremation, takes place without a funeral service, viewing, or attendees present beforehand.
This option is generally simpler in nature and focuses on the cremation process itself.
What is a witnessed cremation?
A witnessed cremation allows selected family members to be present at the crematorium to witness the commencement of the cremation process.
Availability and procedures vary depending on the crematorium, and approval may be required in advance. We will guide families through the process and any venue-specific requirements.
What is the difference between cremation and burial?
Cremation involves placing the coffin into a cremation chamber where the body is respectfully reduced to ashes. The ashes are then returned to the family.
Burial involves placing the coffin into a grave at a cemetery, where it becomes a permanent resting place.
Can we have a service before cremation or burial?
Yes. A service can be held before either option.
What happens after the funeral?
If cremation has taken place, ashes are usually available for collection by the family within approximately 2 days.
For burials, the grave is filled in following the service, and families may arrange for a monument or memorial to be placed at the site.
We are still here after the funeral or cremation to support families if needed. We also complete final documentation on your behalf, including applications for a death certificate.
